Topic: Conflict Prevention and Mediation
The UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA) supports the Secretary-General as well as UN Political Missions in the field to identify and respond to political crises around the world. Of specific interest to this committee is the DPA's work in conflict prevention and mediation. This committee will be simulating the United Nations Standby Team of Mediation Experts, which was formed in 2008 as part of the DPA's Mediation Support Unit. The Standby Team is constituted by experts in negotiation, with each member also having particular expertise in either constitutions, transitional justice, process design, gender and inclusion, or security arrangements. Delegates simulating a member of the team will take what they have learned about the complexities of that dimension of conflict resolution and apply it to crises that arise over the course of committee sessions.
